A knock of 98 runs from Matthew Montgomery and an exciting five-wicket haul from Lifa Ntanzi helped the Hollywoodbets Dolphins produce an emphatic display against the VKB Knights and make it three wins in a row in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week. The duo’s brilliance ensured the KwaZulu-Natal outfit remained the only undefeated team thanks to a 97-run triumph in Stellenbosch on Saturday.
The other hundred percent record going into day three belonged to the Warriors before they went down to the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras by six wickets. While the bizhub Highveld Lions claimed a long-awaited victory after edging the winless Multiply Titans by 32 runs.
The young Dolphins lost the toss and were asked to bat first, making an indifferent start as they found themselves 20-2 before Montgomery combined to good effect with Andile Magokane (41) and Nikhii Prem (41) to stabilize the innings and set an ideal platform. The right-hander went on to record a second-consecutive half-century, smashing nine fours and one six for his dominant 136-ball 98 to guide his side to 229 all out after 50 overs.
Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s bowler, Gerald Coetzee was the stand-out bowler for the Knights, picking up figures of 3/37.
With the ball, the Durban-based team looked in dominant form thanks to Ntanzi’s five-for (5/15). He caused havoc upfront, leaving the Knights reeling on 24-5. Despite late contributions from Coetzee (38) and Brian Kershaw (40*), the Free State side lost wickets at regular intervals and was eventually dismissed for 132 in just 34.3 overs to confirm the win for the Dolphins.
The Cape Cobras had their star man, Ruan Terblanche to thank when they overcame the previously unbeaten Warriors by six wickets following a second half-century to add to his ton on the opening day. After being put in to bowl first, Mihlali Mpongwana (4/42) and Siyabulela Plaatjies (3/34) were the pick of the bowlers, restricting the Eastern Cape team to 192/9 in their allotted overs before Terblanche amassed 61 runs (off 94 balls, 9x4s) at the top of the order in reply.
The Cubs Week’s current leading run-scorer teamed up with Bonga Makhaka (48) for a crucial 101-run, second-wicket partnership to help set up the victory, with the Cobras reaching their target with 7.4 overs to spare.
Finally, the Lions ended their back-to-back losing streak thanks to impressive performances from Cameron Shekleton and Bryce Parsons. The Gauteng side started on the front foot with the bat, with Shekleton (58) recording his third consecutive fifty in an 88-run opening stand with captain, Jacob Miltz (28).
There were further contributions from Parsons (47) and Emanuel Motswiri (46) as the Lions Cubs were eventually removed for 231. The Titans’ Ethan Wentzel was outstanding, returning figures of six for 38.
Chasing a competitive total, Jandre Pretorius (69) and Ximus du Plooy (54) looked good at the crease but it was not enough as the side from Johannesburg continued to pick up wickets while restricting the flow of runs before finally bowling out their opponents for 199 to clinch the result.
Parsons showed his all-round ability with a return of 4/29 in 6.2 overs with ball in hand.
